Explaining SEO:
If you have to explain SEO to your grandma, how do you explain it to her? Can you do it? Will she end up sleeping and telling you stories about her days? Let’s discuss the details one by one.

1. Demonstrate

Understanding SEO can be hard, especially if people concerned are not really into online marketing. But, if they browse and surf online, you can demonstrate to them that how SEO works. Go to Google.com and drag the cursor to the search bar. Indicate any words and type it in. Reiterate that these are the words that people use whenever they search that thing online. When the list goes out, explain to her that this is how SEO works. The goal of SEO is to rank a particular website on the search engine results page or SERP.

2. Teach

As you demonstrate it to her, teach how it is done. Give her the basics that are the website keywords and content. Emphasize on these three things as they are the fundamentals of SEO.

    Website

Go to any website. You may go to a business website such as a home cleaning service company. Let her identify, what she can see on the website. Is it filled with images or texts? Does she think it has good content?

    Keyword

Go back to the search bar on Google and let her understand that those words that you initially typed are treated as keywords. Once these keywords are seen on the website, there is more possibility that it will be on the SERP list.

    Content

Go to the website of the home cleaning service company. Ask her if she reads the phrase “home cleaning service company” in the content. If yes, how many times? If it’s mentioned once or not at all, ask her whether it will appear on the SERP or not. Then, let her know that most likely it will not.

3. Summarize

At this point, you cannot go further in explaining and bringing up all these jargons that she won’t understand in the first place. All you have to do is stick to the essentials of SEO. Tell her who benefits from it and why people are doing SEO. Giving her an overview will let her understand how it is done. When she asks for more, then that’s the right time to gradually mention technicalities.
